31 for 21...Day 31

 At 12:01 AM, October 9, 1998
We began our journey into the world of Down Syndrome.....
The journey has taken us on some wild rides of...
UP- DOWN-OVER-UNDER...and at times....
Hanging Suspended in air...
Truly not knowing what is next?!?!

We lived through every single one of those moments...
Praising the Lord for that...
We now look back and think...
I wouldn't have had it any other way....
Down Syndrome isn't a curse...
It's just different and different can be good....
I'm thankful for who Christ created Jonathan to be....
So, bring on the journey and whatever wild ride is ahead...
Because Jonathan is so worth it!

31 for 21...Day 22

 Having Down Syndrome doesn't keep Jonathan
 from having fun or living life to it's fullest.

Each day is a gift....
From the simple days of nothing much happening...
To the days of amusement park rides and thrills....
Life is Good~

Living in the world of Ds isn't a negative, it's living life with a little something extra ;-)

31 for 21...Music

In concert at Dollywood
 Jonathan absolutely loves music, he tries to snap and sing along. I really can't remember when his  love for music started, maybe birth?! For the past several years Jonathan has loved Guy Penrod, he can pick him out when singing with the Gaither Vocal Band. He has an ear for his favorite singer, which we have found very interesting due to his hearing loss. Well, a couple of weeks ago we were so excited to be going to see/hear Guy Penrod at Dollywood. Jonathan was so thrilled, he pointed and continued to tell us...."it's Guy Penrod" After the concert was over Jonathan was so happy he cried...Yes, that sweet boy cried when seeing his favorite singer!
It truly is the little things of life that make you happy :)

31 For 21...Can Jonathan Drive?

There are some people with Down Syndrome who have a drivers license and can drive...
you can read about them on Noah's Dad blog~

Jonathan turned 16 on Thursday, he is light-years away from getting his drivers license.
That didn't stop him from enjoying practicing his skills while at Dollywood a week ago.
There are many factors why Jonathan will probably never get a drivers license,
I believe he'll be Ok with that :)
So, we'll let him drive our golf cart and take him places like
Dollywood to enjoy a spin every now and then.
The great thing is Jonathan has lots of siblings to chauffeur him around...

A few of the younger kiddos enjoyed taking older siblings for a ride....
Elizabeth & Susanna...she was brave :o

Madison & Mary Ann

This pair made me laugh so hard!!!!

16 TODAY!

Happy 16th Birthday Jonathan!
You have come such a long way, being born 8 weeks early, having major surgery just hours old, and spending your first month of life in NICU. You have been a trooper through countless surgeries. With each year that passes we have watched you check off milestone after milestone. Even if you continue to have a mountain of skills and learning ahead of you,  we marvel as you take it all in stride. You have brought joy to our family and opened our eyes to the  truly important things. The teen years are upon you where attitude and stubbornness abound...proving once again that your just a 'normal' teen. I love you heaps and gobs Mama~

31 for 21...This is heart breaking

I was reading on Wikipedia about Down Syndrome, I was curious as what all information was given. Most of the information was very textbook, kind of what I thought it would be. I also thought, I wish 16 years ago I would have had all that information at my fingertips. As I read on I came to an area titled Abortion Rates...this made my heart sink! Oh I know that many people choose to abort babies with Ds, yet, I still find it very hard to swallow!

Wikipedia...Abortion rates

About 92% of pregnancies in Europe with a diagnosis of Down syndrome are terminated. In the United States, termination rates are around 67%, but this varies significantly depending upon the population evaluated. When nonpregnant people are asked if they would have a termination if their fetus tested positive, 23–33% said yes, when high-risk pregnant women were asked, 46–86% said yes, and when women who screened positive are asked, 89–97% say yes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are a lot of amazing people we are missing in this world!
I'm so thankful that when Arthur and I were ask the question....
"Do you want to abort this baby"....We "BOTH" at the same time said...
"Abortion that's not an option to us!"
We were also blessed to have a doctor who said, "I'm so glad you to hear your answer, you would really be missing out on a blessing if you aborted."
Our family wouldn't be complete without Jonathan, nor would we be the family we are today if he hadn't been born with Ds. I have NO regrets of choosing to have a child with Ds!
31 for 21....Day 4
31 for 21...Day 3
Down Syndrome....
Sometimes life is so fast paced that we forget to stop and take in the simple moments around us....like the moment captured in the picture.
This picture was taken with my cell phone on one of our trips to the Tennessee Aquarium. It was sprinkling out that day and these kiddos took off to run for cover. Once we caught up the foursome they were sitting happily chatting... no cares, just enjoying the slow moment.
Jonathan having Down Syndrome has caused me to have to slow down...life can't always be at my pace....it must be slower, the blessings that come from a slower pace are amazing.
Posted from my cell phone, it just posted a day late...Grr
31 for 21....Day 2
Jonathan and Stephen.....
They are best of friends, yes they are brothers, but their bond goes beyond that!
When you see one, you see the other....
They enjoy the same games and movies....
Like in the picture above, they on occasion dress alike......
I love to see them growing their friendship....
Down Syndrome or not, they are on equal ground :)
